Drake had been at it more than a year.
Colonel Edwin Drake and his salt-well man, Uncle Billy Smith, had spent the better part of two summers driving an iron pipe down through the muck along Oil Creek so the bore would not cave in on itself, boring foot by stubborn foot into the bedrock after a thing most of the county had long since decided was a rich man's foolishness. Crude oil. Pulled up out of the ground in barrels to take the place of the whale oil the lamps were starving for, now that the whales had been hunted thin and the price of a winter's light had climbed past what a working family could easily bear. The money behind the well was the Seneca Oil Company, which had come up out of the old Pennsylvania Rock Oil concern that George Bissell and Jonathan Eveleth had floated years back on equal parts geology and hope. For a year and more the town had laughed at the well even as it watched it, the way you watch a kettle you've sworn isn't going to boil.
By the last week of August the laughing had mostly stopped, replaced by something hungrier and less easy to live beside.
Gabriel felt the change in the town the way he felt weather coming, through the soles of his boots and the back of his neck. The street outside the telegraph office, which a year ago had been mud and a few storefronts and the smell of the creek, now ran thick from dawn to dark with men who had come on the strength of one rumor and stayed on the strength of the next. Speculators in good wool coats stepped high to keep the mud off their boots. Laborers with the smell of left-behind farms still in their clothes stood in clumps outside the land office. Tents had gone up overnight on every patch of open ground, and the canvas of them flapped in the evening wind like the sails of ships that had run aground in the wrong country. And all of them, every last man, turned when Gabriel passed in his clean white shirt and his operator's bearing, because he worked the wire, and the wire was the one place in Titusville where the future arrived before it happened.
"Word on Drake?" they asked him. On the boardwalk. At the hitching post. Leaning in the office door with their hats in their hands.
"Still drilling," he told them.
He had given the answer so many times that month it had worn smooth as a creek stone in his mouth. He could say it kindly or flatly or not at all, and it satisfied no one, because the thing they wanted from him was not news. It was a promise, and the wire did not carry promises. He gave the answer on the morning of the twenty-seventh, to a man in a tobacco-stained coat who took it the way the rest of them took it, with a grunt and a hunch of the shoulders and a glance up the creek as if he could see through the trees to the derrick.
By the middle of that afternoon the answer was no longer true.
Gabriel heard the boy before he saw him — bare feet slapping the boards at a dead run, and under that, somehow, before the boy had said a word, the change in the pitch of the whole street, men going quiet in clusters the way a field goes quiet before the wind hits it.
The boy hit the doorframe with both hands to stop himself, chest heaving, unable for a moment to get anything out at all. He had run the whole way up from the creek and his face was scarlet with it.
"They struck it," he managed. "Drake's well." He gulped air. "It come up the pipe this mornin' and it's still comin', they're catchin' it in a washtub, in a — in everything they got, Mr. Jones, there ain't barrels enough in the county —" He bent over his own knees. "Sixty-nine foot and six inches down. Oil. Real oil, comin' up out of the ground on its own."
For one held breath the office was silent. The freckled clerk at the next station had stopped with his hand in the air over his key. The two speculators arguing by the stove had stopped. Even the sounders seemed to hush, though that was only Gabriel's mind, gone still the way it went still before he sent something that mattered.
Then he turned to the key and the office came apart behind him.
His hand found the brass without his looking at it. Drake well producing — crude oil struck this day August 27 — Titusville — clean and fast, and he felt the words leave his fingers and run down the wire toward Erie and Pittsburgh and the great hungry cities past them, and behind him a man let out a whoop that rattled the window glass, and another threw his hat at the low ceiling, and the freckled clerk was laughing with his whole young face and pounding the desk so the ink pot jumped. Gabriel sent it again. To Cleveland. To Philadelphia. To New York, which wanted it most of all and answered hungriest, the questions racing back down the line before he'd finished sending — how much, how soon, who holds the lease, is there more — and he sat at the center of it relaying the birth of the thing into being, the one steady pair of hands while the room boiled over.
The news did in an afternoon what no news had ever done. By dark it was in three states. By the morning following, the road into town had become a single groaning river of wagons, and the men who had laughed loudest at the well were the first ones up the creek with their money already out of their pockets.
Elizabeth found him in it.
He did not see her come in — there were too many bodies, too much noise — but he felt her hand close over his left one where it rested on the edge of the desk, and he knew the hand without turning. She had fought her way through the crowd at the counter, and a strand of her auburn hair had come loose, and her color was high. She did not try to say anything over the din; there was nothing to say that the room wasn't already shouting. She only pressed his hand once, hard, and held his eyes, and he read it off her the way he read everything — not the money, he knew her far better than that, but the plain enormous fact of standing inside the hour that a thing turned. Look, the press of her hand said. Look what you're part of. He turned his hand over under hers and held it for as long as the wire would let him, which was not long, and then a man was shouting a message across three other men's heads and Gabriel was gone back into the work, and when he looked up again she had been carried back out into the street by the crowd, and she lifted one hand to him over the heads of strangers before the door took her.
The days after the strike ran together into one long fevered shift, and Gabriel came home from them later each night, so that for the better part of a week he and Elizabeth lived like two people passing on a stair.
It was the heat that finally sat them down across from each other. September came in wrong — hot, hotter than August had any right to hand off, a thick wet stillness that would not break no matter how the sky clouded and threatened. The nights were the worst of it. The house held the day's heat in its new green wood and gave it back all night long, and on the third of those nights Gabriel came home near midnight to find Elizabeth not in bed but sitting up at the table in her nightdress with the window thrown open and a glass of water sweating in front of her, and her sketchbook open, though she wasn't drawing.
"You're still up," he said.
"It's too hot to be anything but up." She watched him hang his coat, watched him with the level attention he had stopped being able to slip. "You've got that look. The one where your hands are home and the rest of you is still down at the office."
He could not deny it, so he sat. He took her glass without asking and drank half of it, and she let him, which was its own small forgiveness. Out the open window the town never fully quieted now; somewhere down the slope a fiddle was going in one of the new saloons, and under it the constant low grind of a place that had forgotten how to sleep.
"The wires are running strange," he said, because it was true and because it was easier than the other thing, which was that he had hardly thought of her in three days. "In dry weather you'll get a charge build up in the line — it bites you, little blue spark off the key, the men wear gloves against it. But this is more than dry weather. Two nights back it snapped at me hard enough to —" He stopped, and turned his right hand over, and there on the pad of his thumb was a small white mark, a healed-looking burn no bigger than a lentil. "Hard enough to leave that."
Elizabeth took the hand and looked at the mark and pressed it with her own thumb, frowning, the way her father the doctor must have taught her to frown at a thing without quite knowing she'd learned it. "That should hurt."
"It did. For a minute." He drew the hand back, mildly, and she let it go. "It's nothing. The whole air's got something in it this week. You feel it too. The dogs have been off."
"The dogs have been off," she agreed. She turned in her chair to face him full on, and the loose strand of hair was stuck to her neck in the heat, and he had a sudden plain wish to be no one in particular, a man with a small life and a wife and no wire calling him out into the dark every other night. "Gabriel. When the shouting's done — and it will be done, these things always burn down to something a man can live next to — when it's done, I'd like my husband back. The whole of him. Not the part that's left over after the line's had its share."
"You'll have him," he said.
"I'd believe you more," she said, not unkindly, "if you weren't listening to the wire while you said it."
He had been. He hadn't known he was doing it — there was a sounder going faintly in his memory the way a tune goes, the night's traffic he'd left Calloway to mind — and the fact that she had caught him at it, again, when he had not even caught himself, sat him back in his chair. He took her hand the second time without being prompted, and that seemed to mean more to her than the words had, and they sat in the heat with the fiddle going down the hill until she was tired enough to sleep. He walked her to bed and lay down beside her and listened to the wires hum through the open window long after she'd gone under, and he could not have said, if she had asked him, whether the sound comforted him or called him.
He took the overnight shift again on the first of September, and she walked him as far as the corner.
"Be careful," she said, "and stay out of whatever there is to get into out there." The street past the corner was its usual midnight self now, lamplight and noise and the shapes of men who had nowhere better to be.
"You know me," he said. "Mr. Excitement."
She laughed at that, the real laugh, the one that came up out of her without her deciding to let it, and she went back up the lane toward the house to draw by candlelight the way she did when the heat kept her from sleeping. And that — her laugh, and her back going away from him up the dark lane — was the last wholly ordinary thing that happened to either of them for a very long time, though there was no way on earth for him to have known it.
He had the lamp trimmed and the wires checked and was settling in to the night's flood when the dogs began.
They began all at once, every dog in Titusville, and they would not leave off. Then, stranger, the birds woke. Down along the creek and up in the maples behind the office they came awake and began to sing, the full-throated tangle of birdsong that belongs to four in the morning, except that it was not yet one. Gabriel sat with his hand stilled over the key and listened to the birds insist it was dawn, and then he got up and went to the office door to see what in the world had told them so.
The sky was on fire.
Not the faint green shimmer he'd heard the far-north country got of a winter. This filled the whole bowl of the heavens from edge to edge — great hanging curtains of red and green and a hard, electric violet, folding and unfolding and running across the stars in slow waves, so bright that the men spilling out of the taverns stood in the middle of the street and read the printing off whiskey crates and newspapers by the light of it. The colors moved. They breathed. They threw a shifting glow down over the upturned faces so that every man in the street looked painted, looked drowned, looked like something other than himself.
"What in heaven's name is it?" Mrs. Jenkins had her hand pressed flat to her chest at the edge of the boardwalk, her shawl forgotten and slipping. Down the way someone was saying the word Judgment, low and serious, and someone else was laughing at him for it, and the laugh had an edge of fear in it.
The rail-master came up at Gabriel's shoulder in the office doorway, his face tilted up and lit green. "You ever see the like? Do you reckon it's a sign of something, Jones?"
"I reckon it's the northern lights come down to join Drake's party," Gabriel said, and the rail-master barked a relieved laugh and clapped him on the arm and went back out to stand with the others, glad to have been given permission not to be afraid.
Gabriel did not get to be glad for long. Behind him, in the empty office, the sounder had begun to do a thing he had never in his life heard a sounder do.
It was chattering with no one sending.
He came back in and stood over it. The key on his desk was ticking out a fast broken nonsense all on its own, and when he brought his hand near the brass he felt the heat coming off it before his skin ever touched the metal. The line was alive — alive with a current that was not his battery and was not any operator's down the whole length of it, a current that was coming out of the burning sky and pouring down the wires into the room. He knew it the way he had always known things at the key, all at once and without proof and without doubt. The same fire that was hanging over the town was running in the iron.
He should have killed the line. He knew it, and he did not do it, and he would spend a long time afterward turning over the question of why.
Peter the night watchman made the case for him. He came banging through the door, lantern swinging, his face gone bloodless, and he was talking before he was fully inside. "Jones — Jones, the wires up the poles are glowing, you hear me, the whole sky's gone over to the devil and the wires are glowing like they mean to catch — you got to kill the line, man, kill it before this place burns down around you."
"Can't," Gabriel said. He hadn't looked up. "There's trains on the rails tonight. I cut the line, they run blind — a missed switch, two trains on one stretch of track. I shut down, somebody likely dies." All of which was true, and all of which he believed, and not one word of which was the whole reason, and he knew it even as he said it. The whole reason was leaning toward the key. The whole reason was that he had loved the current in the wire since he was a boy who refused the gloves, had loved the small blue proof that something invisible moved through the metal and through him, and here was that same thing grown to the size of the whole sky, and the part of him that had always wanted to be part of the circuit could not make his hand pull the wire.
To show Peter — to show himself — he reached down and pulled the battery lead clean off its post. The office should have gone dead silent. The sounder kept right on chattering, running now on nothing but the sky's own current, the storm itself working the key.
Peter stared at the impossible thing for a long moment. "You're mad," he said, and was gone, his lantern light swallowed up in the colors before he'd cleared the steps.
The storm climbed. The glass buzzed in the window frames. Blue fire crawled along the wire where it came in through the wall and dripped off the ends of the dead battery lead in fat sparks that hissed on the floorboards, and the air took on the taste of a struck match and the smell of a blacksmith's forge. Gabriel worked the key through all of it, catching the broken pieces of other men's messages out of the chaos on the line and sending back what order he could, and it was the old pleasure raised past anything he had a name for — to be the one steady hand at the center while the heavens themselves came undone — and he rode it past the point where a wiser or a less greedy man would have stepped back from the desk.
His hand was on the key when it crested.
The surge came up the line all at once. There was a sound like the world's seam splitting and a light with no color in it, a white past white, and it went into him — through the brass and through the small bones of his hand and up the long muscle of his arm and into the dead center of his chest — and for the length of that white instant Gabriel was not a man sitting at a desk but a part of the circuit, the current running clean through him as it ran through the iron, and there was no pain in it at all, only an enormous roaring brightness, as if the whole burning sky were being poured through the eye of a single needle and the needle was the middle of him.
Then the floor came up and took him in the shoulder, and the brightness closed like a fist, and there was nothing.
He did not know how long he was down.
When the room came back it came back quiet. The storm was draining out of the lines, the sounder gone still at last, the smell of scorched pine hanging in the close air. He was slumped against the wooden partition with his legs folded under him wrong, and his ears were full of a roar like the inside of a seashell, and every muscle he owned was jumping and twitching on its own account, firing and letting go, firing and letting go, the way they say a frog's leg jumps under a current. His breath dragged in like the breath of a man hauled up out of deep water at the last possible moment.
His right hand was a ruin. The whole palm and the inside of the fingers were blistered and blackened where they had been wrapped around the key, a burn deep and wide enough to cripple a man, the kind that meant months of agony and a claw of a hand at the end of it.
It did not hurt the way it should have. That was the first wrong thing, and he was too emptied-out to mark it.
He sat on the floor of the office a long while with his ruined hand in his lap and let the world reassemble itself around him. Down the street a man was still hollering, hoarse now, about the end of days. Above the town the great curtains of light wheeled and thinned and at last began to draw back up into the north, the ordinary dark seeping in behind them an inch at a time, and the birds, having sung their false dawn until their throats gave out, went confused and silent into the trees to wait for the real one. He bound the hand with a strip torn off the cleaning rag, clumsy, left-handed, and lay down on the office cot because he could not have walked home if the house had been burning, and he slept without meaning to.
He woke to the town louder than he had ever heard it.
The news of the strike had pulled fresh men off every train through the night, and the road was one long unbroken groan of wheels, and the whole place had the high wild pitch of a town that believed it had been chosen. Gabriel lay still on the cot with his eyes shut and listened to it, and the listening was the second wrong thing, though he had no name for it yet.
He could hear too much. He had always heard well — it was the root of everything he was — but this was past hearing. He could pick the separate axles of separate wagons out of the general grind, the dry one and the greased one. He could hear a woman somewhere down the boardwalk counting coins into her palm, the small distinct chime of each one against the last. And under all of it, when he turned his attention inward to find it, he could hear his own heart, which after a night that should have left it slamming against his ribs was going slow and even and entirely untroubled, a steady unhurried tick, like a wall clock, like a sounder at rest between messages.
He sat up. He unwound the rag from his hand to see how bad it was, bracing for the sight of it.
The burn had closed.
Not healed — he knew the slow ugly weeks of healing, had nursed wire-burns and lamp-burns half his life and watched them suppurate and crust and pull pink and tender over a month or more. This was not weeks of work. The black was gone and the blisters were gone and under where they had been was new skin, pink and tight and whole, the way a serious burn looks after a month of clean bandaging and good luck — and as he turned the hand in the gray morning light coming through the high window he could very nearly watch it knitting closer, or near enough that he could not have sworn before God that it wasn't.
He pressed it with the thumb of his other hand. It was tender, and it was warm, and it was his, and there was no honest account of it anywhere in the world he knew. He sat on the edge of the cot a long time turning the hand over and over in the dirty light, the boomtown roaring its fortune outside the thin wall, and for the first time in his life Gabriel Jones was afraid of a thing he could not put into any code at all.
He tried, all the same, because trying to make sense of a thing was the only way he had ever known to be in the world. He laid it out the way he'd lay out a garbled message, hunting the order under the noise. The storm had put a current through him no man was built to take. A current like that stopped hearts; it did not mend hands overnight and slow a pulse to a wall-clock tick. There was no rule he knew that fit it, and he knew a great many rules — about lightning and Leyden jars and the small blue bite of a charged line — and not one of them reached this. The wreckage would not resolve into sense, however he turned it, and that was the part that put the cold in him: not the wonder of it, but that for once in his life there was a message in his own two hands he could not read, and that the message was him.
Calloway came on shift and found him there and clapped him on the shoulder and said hell of a night, wasn't it, you could see those lights clear from the ridge. Gabriel said it was something, all right. He kept the hand in his lap.
Elizabeth came by mid-morning with a basket — fresh bread, a wedge of cheese in wax paper, a jar of pickled beets — and the whole of the night still bright in her, and she set the basket on the corner of his desk careful of the curling sheets of code and started telling it before she'd got her bonnet off. How the whole sky had caught fire green and then red. How the McPherson children had run circles under the trees with their shadows bending every which way. How even old Mrs. Callahan had come down off her stoop, where she had not been seen to venture in a decade, and stood out in the road with her shawl clutched at her throat muttering that it was surely the end of the world, and could not look away from it for all that.
He let her talk. He loved to watch her tell a thing; it was one of the great plain pleasures of his life, and he was greedy for it this morning in a way he did not examine too closely. And when she reached across the desk and took his right hand into both of hers — the burned one, without knowing, in the middle of a sentence about Mrs. Callahan — he went very still.
"You're cold," she said, breaking off, frowning down at the hand. She turned it over between her two warm ones, and her thumb passed directly across the new pink skin, the place where the fire had gone into him, and in the dim crowded office, carried along on her own story, she did not see it for what it was. "Cold as a stone, and you've not slept a wink, look at the state of you." She folded both her hands around his to warm it, the way you'd warm a child's. "I worry about you shut up in here all night with nothing but the wires for company, Gabriel. It's a lonely thing. Promise me you won't let them have all of you." She squeezed the hand. "Don't let those wires steal you away from me. You hear?"
He looked down at his hand held inside her two hands, at the new skin where the storm had gone in, healing faster than any man's skin had the right to, the secret of it sitting warm and hidden in her grip.
"I hear you," he said.
And he did not tell her. That was the third wrong thing of the night, and it was the only one of the three he chose, and he would go on choosing it, in one form or another, for longer than either of them could have begun to imagine.
